How far is Puerto de la Cruz from Tenerife South Airport?

Every other pickup point

Tenerife South Airport to Puerto de la Cruz is about 81 minutes and 97 km without traffic, and the car for it is handed over in the arrival area at TFS. The airport has a single terminal, and the arrival area in it is the named handover place. If you would rather not drive north on the day you land, Puerto de la Cruz has named pickup points of its own: Free parking Puerto de la Cruz, Parking Parque Taoro and the Guaguas bus station, with delivery to an address in the town as well.

The same terminal is where the other long drives north and west begin. Santa Cruz is about 59 minutes and 66 km away, Tenerife North Airport about 65 minutes and 73 km, and Los Gigantes about 50 minutes and 45 km, all without traffic. Tenerife's motorways are toll-free, so the road costs on all of them are fuel, parking and any fines, and the renter pays all three.

What do I need to collect the car at TFS?

Check dates and cars

01 A physical card in the main driver's name

A physical, embossed credit card in the main driver's name can be a condition of collecting the car, and it has to be with you at the handover. Some suppliers accept a debit card, and when they do the booking and the voucher say so; that card also has to be physical, personalised, embossed and in the main driver's name. A card on a phone is not a physical card.

02 The licence card itself

A valid national licence with its details in Latin script, and an expiry date no earlier than the last day of the rental. Copies and electronic licences are not accepted. If your licence is valid only in the country that issued it, carry an International Driving Permit as well and show it if asked.

03 Age and experience are set per car

The minimum age and the years of driving experience each car needs are on that car's page, and they can differ between two similar models. The rental agent can refuse the handover if the driver does not meet them, so use the search filters to show only the cars that fit.

04 What standard cover leaves out

Standard insurance does not cover the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen or the interior. That is the standard level; each car lists the cover levels it offers, and what a higher level adds is shown on the car. After any insured event, tell the rental agent straight away and get a police report, or the insurance is cancelled and you are fully responsible.

05 Fuel, the phone and the 24-hour minimum

Return the car with the fuel level it had at pickup. A lower level is charged at the rental company's rates, and a higher one is not refunded. The phone number given at booking must be reachable throughout the rental and on the day before pickup. The shortest chargeable rental is 24 hours.

How long are the drives north and west from the airport?

What the roads are like

01 Los Gigantes, 50 min

About 45 km from the terminal to Los Gigantes, where neither the town nor Puerto de Santiago next to it has a fuel station; the nearest is a DISA on the TF-454 above the resort. Costa Adeje is about half an hour and 22 km from the airport, and from a base there the day drives from Costa Adeje to Los Gigantes and to Masca each take under half an hour.

02 Masca, 58 min

About 52 km, the last part on the TF-436, the only road in and out of the village. While a fire-risk alert is declared, the Cabildo runs access control on it from 09:00 to 16:00, and vehicles driven by visitors for purely recreational purposes are turned back. The control switches on and off with the risk, so check before setting off; bus line 355 runs to Masca. Tour coaches in Teno are limited to 10 m and run one way: drive the TF-436 south and you travel with them, north and you meet them.

03 Santa Cruz, 59 min

About 66 km up the TF-1 to Santa Cruz, where the TF-1 meets the TF-5. Both motorways carry fixed speed cameras. At the junction there is a BP at Avenida Tres de Mayo 85, open 06:00 to 22:00, and a DISA at Ortega y Gasset 1, open 24 hours. Santa Cruz is delivery only, so a car booked there is brought to your address.

04 Teide, 62 min

About 49 km to the Parador de Las Canadas in the caldera, up the TF-21 through Vilaflor; El Portillo, on the northern approach, is about 76 minutes and 63 km. The cable car base is at km 43 of the TF-21, at 2,356 m, and there is no fuel station inside the national park, so the crater drive starts with a full tank from the coast.

05 Tenerife North Airport, 65 min

About 73 km to Los Rodeos, which sits at 633 m, about 9 minutes and 5 km from La Laguna. Most of its flights are domestic, and the handover place there is also the arrival area.

06 Las Teresitas, 73 min

About 75 km to the beach. From Santa Cruz itself it is about 16 minutes and 10 km, and Santa Cruz to Puerto de la Cruz is about 28 minutes and 37 km.

07 Puerto de la Cruz, 81 min

About 97 km to the north coast. In the town the TF-31 runs through the Martianez false tunnel, 292.7 m long and unlit, so lights go on before it. Cepsa and BP stations stand on the Carretera del Botanico, 0.4 to 0.7 km from Plaza del Charco, for the top-up before the car goes back.

These times are without traffic, so a real drive takes that long or longer. The return legs are close but not identical: Puerto de la Cruz to the airport is about 82 minutes, Los Gigantes about 51 minutes and 44 km, Tenerife North about 64 minutes and 72 km, and Santa Cruz about 58 minutes.

How do the deposit and the payment work?

The rental conditions in full

The deposit for each car is on its listing before you book, and the booking and the voucher both set out how the rest of the rental is paid, how the deposit is held and when it comes back. If the holiday runs longer than booked, the extension has to be arranged with the rental agent in advance. Fuel, parking, fines and any tolls are the renter's to pay, and a car returned so dirty that it cannot be inspected is washed at the renter's expense.

Which way out of the airport, and where do I fill up?

Car hire across Tenerife
A road cut into red volcanic rock on the south of the island

The TF-1 runs from the airport up the east coast to Santa Cruz, where it meets the TF-5, and both carry fixed speed cameras. Two stations open 24 hours sit at the start of it: a Repsol on the airport access road, about 0.4 km from the terminal, and a BP at km 0.5 of the Carretera Atogo on the TF-1, about 1.5 km north. The same two are the nearest to the terminal when the tank has to go back at the level it had at pickup.

Hire cars are allowed on paved public roads only, so the tracks in Teno and Anaga are off limits in a hire car. On the island's narrow mountain roads the parts most likely to be damaged are the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen and the interior, the same four parts standard cover leaves out.

Since 1 January 2026 a V-16 beacon has replaced warning triangles in Spain, and every hire car on the island is Spanish-registered. Check the beacon is in the car before leaving the arrival area; driving without an approved one is an 80 euro fine.

Can I return the car at Tenerife North or in Puerto de la Cruz?

Set a different drop-off

Yes. Set the drop-off separately in the search and leave the car somewhere else on the island. The two airports are the deepest one-way pairing by a wide margin; after them come the southern resorts and Puerto de la Cruz, then the smaller places. The one-way fee, where there is one, shows with the price before you book.

Which car suits the drive north?

See what is available

Puerto de la Cruz and back is about 194 km on its own, before any day out from either end. Most cars on the island carry no mileage limit, and each car states its own mileage terms in the results.

Decide automatic or manual at the start of the search: automatics are a minority of the list, found mainly in the compact and crossover classes rather than the economy one. Seven-seaters are scarce, so book one early for six or seven people with luggage, and with children aboard, the car seat rules decide where they sit.

Frequently asked questions

Or just check dates

The questions below cover the drive on from the south airport: how long it takes, where the car can be left, and what the handover needs. The rental conditions are set out in full on the terms page.

How long is the drive from Tenerife South Airport to Puerto de la Cruz?

About 81 minutes and 97 km without traffic. The return leg, Puerto de la Cruz to the airport, is about 82 minutes over the same 97 km. Traffic only adds to those times, so leave the return to the airport with time in hand.

Is Tenerife Sur the same airport as Tenerife South?

Yes. Tenerife Sur is the name the airport is signed and ticketed under, formally Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur Reina Sofia, and its code is TFS. Tenerife North, Los Rodeos, is TFN, about 65 minutes and 73 km away without traffic.

How long is the drive from Tenerife South Airport to Santa Cruz?

About 59 minutes and 66 km without traffic, up the TF-1. Santa Cruz itself is delivery only, so a car booked to start there is brought to the address you give rather than collected from a named point.

How far is Los Gigantes from Tenerife South Airport?

About 50 minutes and 45 km without traffic. There is no fuel station in Los Gigantes or in Puerto de Santiago next to it, so fill up near the airport or at the DISA on the TF-454 above the resort.

Can I collect at Tenerife South and leave the car in Puerto de la Cruz?

Yes. Set Puerto de la Cruz as the drop-off in the search. That pairing has fewer cars than the airport pair or Playa de las Americas, so book it early, and the one-way fee shows with the price.

What do I need to bring when I collect?

The licence card itself, in Latin script and valid until at least the last day of the rental, and the payment card the booking asks for in the main driver's name, which may have to be a physical embossed credit card. Keep the phone number you booked with switched on from the day before pickup.

Can I keep the car for longer once I am here?

Tell the rental agent in advance, before the original return date. The phone number you gave when booking has to stay reachable for the whole rental, and it is how the agent reaches you about the change.

Can I hire a car for just a few hours?

No. The minimum chargeable period is 24 hours, so a few hours are charged as a full day, and Monday morning to Tuesday afternoon is two days.
