Cheap car hire in Tenerife is decided by when you book, not by how long you hunt, and the same is true of every car rental on the island. The low end of this island is a thin layer of small cars, and winter is the high season here rather than summer, so the same small hatchback is one price in October and quite another in the week before Christmas. What saves money is booking early on your own dates and knowing what is attached to the car: the deposit held against your card, what the cover leaves out, and the fuel rule. All three sit on every car in every car on the island above, priced for your dates, from cheap car hire at Tenerife South airport to the resort pickup points and the north.
The cars come from local suppliers who run their own fleets on Tenerife, not from a call centre on another continent. That is what makes the low end of this island possible in the first place: they buy for the roads here, they turn cars around at the airport all day, and they compete with each other on the same screen while you watch.
Tenerife prices move with the season and the week: the same small car costs one thing in October and another at Christmas. Every figure on this site is read from the live listings for the dates you type, so you are comparing what is actually available rather than what was true last spring.
Pickup points from both airports to the resorts and the capital, all searched at once. Collect where you land, or in the resort a few days in, and if the car needs to go back somewhere else, a one-way drop is priced into the booking before you commit.
Most cars cancel free, and each car says whether yours does. That is what makes booking early sensible here rather than a gamble: you hold the car at today's price and you are not committed to it.
Some cars hold nothing against your card at all, and the search marks which before you book. Where a deposit does apply, the amount and when it comes back are on the car and on your voucher, never a surprise at pickup.
Every car shows what its insurance includes and what it leaves out, and the cover page explains the rest in English rather than in clauses. If you are heading for the mountain roads, that is the page that decides which car you want.
Questions before you book, or a change of plan after, go to info@tenerifeairportcarhire.com. We know the island, the pickup points and the suppliers, and we would rather answer a question early than have you find out on the day.
Type your dates and the island's cars come back priced for that week, cheapest first, with the deposit and the cover on every one of them.

Winter is the season here, not summer, and the cheap end of the choice is thin. From December into January the island fills, the small automatics go first, and the price of what is left climbs hard. Most cars cancel free, which turns an early booking into something close to a free option: hold the car now, and if something better appears you have lost nothing.
Shoulder season is the other half of the answer. October and through the spring choice is wide and the small cars sit unbooked, so the same search that returns almost nothing under a certain price at Christmas returns a page of it in May. If your dates are flexible by a week either way, run the search twice and let the prices tell you which week to take.
The small cars are the value here, and not only on the daily rate. Tenerife's good driving is narrow: the resort streets are tight, the mountain roads are walled, and the parking bays were laid out for cars the size of a Panda. A compact car is cheaper to hire, cheaper to fuel, and easier everywhere you are actually going to take it.
Two things move you up a class. Four adults with luggage climbing to the crater will feel the smallest engines on the way up, so a step up is money well spent if the mountain days are the point of the week. And if nobody in the party drives a manual, filter for an automatic from the start rather than hoping: there are fewer of them here than in the UK, and in the busy weeks they go first. Everything else is the same question answered live for your dates.
The questions below are the ones that come up before a booking: how the search works, when to book, who you are renting from and what to have with you when you collect. The rental conditions themselves are written out in full on the terms page.
How do I find the cheap cars for my dates?
Put your dates and your pickup point into the search above and every car on the island comes back priced for that window, cheapest first. Prices here move with the season and the week, so a search for your own dates is the only price worth having.
Is it cheaper to book early or wait?
Early, on this island, and it is not close in winter. The cheap cars are a thin layer at the bottom and they go first. Most bookings cancel free, so an early booking is close to a free option on the price.
Does a no-deposit car cost more?
Usually a little, and it can still be the cheaper choice. A no-deposit car takes nothing off your card and leaves nothing to reclaim, which matters more than a couple of euros a day if your card limit is doing other work on holiday.
Who am I actually renting from?
A local supplier with its own fleet on the island. You book through this site, you get a voucher naming your supplier and where to meet them, and you collect the car from them at the pickup point you chose.
What makes the price jump between weeks?
Demand, mostly at Christmas and through January, when the island fills and the cheap end sells out first. The same car in October and at Christmas is not the same price, which is why this site prices live rather than publishing a rate card.
What do I need to bring to collect the car?
The licence itself as a card, not a photograph, and a payment card in the main driver's name. Most suppliers want a real credit card with raised numbers to hold the deposit against; your voucher says whether yours takes a debit card instead.
