Can I collect at Tenerife South Airport and leave the car at Tenerife North?

Every place a car can start or end

Tenerife South Airport to Tenerife North Airport is the one-way with by far the widest choice of cars on the island, and the reverse direction matches it. The car is collected in the arrival area at Tenerife South Airport and left in the arrival area at Los Rodeos, the northern airport, or the other way round, and in both directions the pairing offers several times the choice of any other one-way on the island. The drive north is about 65 minutes and 73 km without traffic, and the drive south about 64 minutes and 72 km.

The two airports serve different flights. Tenerife South handles mostly international traffic, while most flights at Tenerife North are domestic, many of them connections to the other Canary Islands. That split is why a holiday can land at one airport and fly home from the other, and leaving the car at the departure airport takes the second crossing of the island out of the trip.

Does it matter which way round, Tenerife South to North Airport or north to south?

Collecting in the north instead
A coastal town below terraced hills on the Canary coast

Not for the choice of car: the pairing is as wide in one direction as in the other, so the flights decide which way round it runs. One-way works island-wide as well, but the choice drops away after the airport pair: next come the southern resort strip and leaving the car in Puerto de la Cruz, then the smaller pick-up points. Whichever pair you choose, set the drop-off in the search and the one-way fee shows with the price on each car, before anything is booked.

A car collected in Golf del Sur goes back to Golf del Sur, and the same holds for Guia de Isora: both take same-place rentals only, with no one-way in either direction. The two airports, by contrast, take a one-way both ways round.

What is the drive like between the two airports?

Driving the TF-1 and TF-5

01 Tenerife South to Tenerife North, 65 min

About 73 km. The TF-1 runs up the east coast from the airport to the capital, Santa Cruz, where it meets the TF-5. Tenerife North stands at 633 m, and the car goes back in its arrival area.

02 Tenerife North to Tenerife South, 64 min

About 72 km, for a holiday that lands in the north and flies home from the south. Tenerife South has a single terminal, and the car goes back in its arrival area.

03 Filling up near Tenerife North

The nearest station is a PCAN on the TF-152, the Carretera General del Norte, at km 2.08, about 0.44 km from the terminal and open 24 hours. It is the last fill before a car goes back at Los Rodeos.

04 Filling up near Tenerife South

A Repsol on the airport access road, about 0.4 km from the terminal, and a BP at km 0.5 of the Carretera Atogo on the TF-1, about 1.5 km north, are both open 24 hours: the first fill on the way north, or the last before the car goes back in the south.

05 Car parks at both ends

At Tenerife South the general car park, P1, is open 24 hours a few metres from the terminal, with 2.2 m headroom on the covered spaces. At Tenerife North the general car park is 1 minute from the terminal, open 24 hours with 2.1 m headroom, and the long-stay P4 is 4 minutes away, with 4.5 m headroom and prior booking.

06 Speed cameras, no tolls

The TF-1 and the TF-5 both carry fixed speed cameras, and a fine is the renter's to pay. Tenerife's motorways are toll-free.

These times are without traffic, so a real drive takes that long or longer. Each figure belongs to its own direction: about 65 minutes and 73 km from Tenerife South to Tenerife North, about 64 minutes and 72 km from Tenerife North back to Tenerife South.

How do I book a one-way between the two airports?

Start at Tenerife South

Choose the dates, keep Tenerife South Airport as the pick-up and set Tenerife North Airport as the drop-off, or the other way round. Each car in the results carries its one-way fee with the price, and its deposit, its cover levels and whether it needs a credit card are shown on the same car.

What do the rental terms mean when the car goes back at the other airport?

Every rental condition

The car goes back with the fuel level it had at the handover, even though the handover was at the other airport. A lower level is charged at the rental company's rates, and a fuller tank is not refunded, so the last fill is the one nearest the drop-off. The shortest chargeable rental is 24 hours: a car collected at Tenerife South and left at Tenerife North on the same day is charged as a full day. Fuel, parking and fines are the renter's to pay.

Standard insurance does not cover the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen or the interior. That is the standard level; each car lists the cover levels it offers, with the deductible for each cover level shown when you open the car. After any insured event, tell the rental agent at once and get a police report; without both, the insurance is cancelled and the driver is fully responsible. Hire cars are allowed on paved public roads only.

What do I need in the arrival area?

Hiring for less at the north airport

The car is handed over in the arrival area, so the licence and the card have to be with you when you land. That is the licence card itself, with its details in Latin script and an expiry no earlier than the end of the rental, since copies and electronic licences are not accepted; if the licence is valid only in the country that issued it, an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended. The booking may ask for a physical embossed credit card in the main driver's name. Where a debit card is accepted, the booking and the voucher say so, and it too has to be physical, personalised, embossed and in the main driver's name.

The phone number given at booking must be reachable throughout the rental and on the day before pick-up. Each car's minimum driver age and experience are on its page, and the agent can refuse the handover if they are not met. How the rest of the rental is paid, how the deposit is held and when it comes back are set out in the booking and the voucher.

Frequently asked questions

Set the other airport as the drop-off

The questions below cover the one-way between the two airports in both directions: how long the drive takes, where the fee shows, where the car is handed over and handed back, and where to fill up. The rental conditions are set out in full on the terms page.

How long is the drive from Tenerife South Airport to Tenerife North Airport?

About 65 minutes and 73 km without traffic, so a real drive takes that long or longer. The TF-1 runs up the east coast to Santa Cruz, where it meets the TF-5, and both roads carry fixed speed cameras.

Can I hire a car from Tenerife North Airport to Tenerife South Airport?

Yes. The drive south offers the same wide choice of cars as the drive north, and it is about 64 minutes and 72 km without traffic. Set Tenerife North Airport as the pick-up and Tenerife South Airport as the drop-off, and the one-way fee shows with the price.

How much is the one-way fee between the two airports?

The fee shows with the price of each car in the search for your dates, so it is known before you book rather than met at the handover. The deposit and the cover levels sit on the same car.

Where is the car collected and where does it go back?

In the arrival area at both airports: the car is collected in the arrival area at one and handed back in the arrival area at the other. The phone number given at booking has to be reachable throughout the rental and on the day before pick-up.

Where can I fill up before leaving the car at the airport?

At Tenerife North, a PCAN on the TF-152 at km 2.08, open 24 hours, about 0.44 km from the terminal. At Tenerife South, a Repsol on the airport access road and a BP at km 0.5 of the Carretera Atogo, both open 24 hours. The car goes back with the fuel level it had at the handover; a lower level is charged at the rental company's rates and a fuller tank is not refunded.

Can I leave the car somewhere other than the other airport?

Yes, one-way works across the island, but the choice of cars is widest between the two airports by a wide margin. After them come the southern resort strip and Puerto de la Cruz, then the smaller pick-up points. Golf del Sur and Guia de Isora take same-place rentals only, so a car collected in either goes back where it started.
