Where is an automatic handed over in Puerto de la Cruz?

The other pick-up points

Automatic car hire in Puerto de la Cruz starts at a named point in the town or at the address you give. The named points are Free parking Puerto de la Cruz, Parking Parque Taoro and Bus Station Guaguas Puerto de la Cruz; choose City delivery instead and the car is brought to your hotel or apartment, with each car showing whether delivery is included or priced. No other town on the island has named points of its own, and for depth of choice a pick-up in Puerto de la Cruz comes fourth on the island, after Tenerife South, Tenerife North and Playa de las Americas.

Automatics are a minority on the island's list, concentrated in the compact, crossover and SUV classes. The automatics on it include the Toyota Yaris, Hyundai i20, VW Polo, Hyundai Bayon, Toyota Yaris Cross, Nissan Juke, SEAT Ateca and Audi Q3, so if nobody in the party drives a manual, filter the search for an automatic from the start.

Where do I fill up before the climb to Teide?

Up to the national park
Pine forest on the upper slopes with the peak of Teide behind

In Puerto de la Cruz, before leaving: there is no fuel station inside the Teide national park. In the town, a Cepsa and a BP stand on the Carretera del Botanico, 0.4 to 0.7 km from Plaza del Charco. From there, the road up from the north coast reaches El Portillo, on the northern approach, in about 38 minutes and 29 km without traffic, and the cable car base stands at km 43 of the TF-21, at 2,356 m.

The car goes back with the fuel level it had at the handover. A lower level is charged at the rental company's rates, and a fuller tank is not refunded. Fuel in the Canaries is cheaper than in mainland Spain or the UK, Tenerife's motorways are toll-free, and fuel, parking and fines are the renter's to pay.

How long are the drives from Puerto de la Cruz?

The island's road rules

01 La Orotava, 9 min

About 7 km, the shortest drive on the list from Puerto de la Cruz.

02 Icod and Garachico, 27 and 31 min

About 22 km to Icod de los Vinos and 26 km to Garachico.

03 Tenerife North and La Laguna, 27 min

About 31 km to Tenerife North Airport and 30 km to La Laguna. The airport stands at 633 m, and a car can also be collected in the arrival area of the northern airport, the airport's named handover place, instead of in the town.

04 Santa Cruz, Las Teresitas and Taganana, 30 to 47 min

About 30 minutes and 38 km to the city of Santa Cruz, 44 minutes and 47 km to Las Teresitas beach and 47 minutes and 49 km to Taganana in Anaga. Hire cars are allowed on paved public roads only, so the tracks in parts of Anaga stay off the plan.

05 Teide, 38 and 54 min

About 29 km to El Portillo and 44 km to the Parador de Las Canadas. The summit, at 3,715 m, is reached on the Telesforo Bravo trail, booked in timed slots on Tenerife ON and no longer free for non-residents since 1 September 2025.

06 Masca, 49 min

About 45 km, the last part on the TF-436. While a fire-risk alert is declared, access control on that road turns back vehicles driven by visitors for purely recreational purposes from 09:00 to 16:00, and it switches on and off with the risk, so check before setting off; bus line 355 runs to the village.

These times are without traffic, so a real drive takes that long or longer. In the town itself, the TF-31 runs through the Martianez false tunnel, 292.7 m long and unlit.

What does the driver need at the handover?

See the cars for your dates

Whether the automatic is handed over at a named point or at your address, the driver needs the same documents. That is the licence card itself, with its details in Latin script and an expiry no earlier than the end of the rental, since copies and electronic licences are not accepted; an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended only where the licence is valid solely in the country that issued it. The booking may ask for a physical embossed credit card in the main driver's name; if a debit card is accepted, the booking and the voucher say so, and it too has to be physical, personalised, embossed and in the main driver's name.

Each car's minimum driver age and driving experience are on its page, and they can differ even between similar models, so use the filters to find the automatics that match; the agent can refuse the handover if they are not met. The phone number given at booking must be reachable throughout the rental and on the day before pick-up. Each car shows its deposit before you book, including the cars that hold no deposit, and how the rest is paid and when the deposit comes back are in the booking and the voucher.

What else do the rental terms ask?

Collecting at Tenerife North

01 Standard cover

Standard insurance does not cover the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen or the interior. That is the standard level; each car lists the cover levels it offers, and the deductible on each cover level is shown on the car before you book.

02 After an incident

Tell the rental agent at once and get a police report; without both, the insurance is cancelled and the driver is fully responsible. Deliberate damage or neglect voids the insurance as well.

03 The shortest rental

The minimum chargeable period is 24 hours, so a car kept for a few hours is charged as a full day. To keep it longer, tell the rental agent in advance.

04 The parking colours

Blue-lined bays are metered with a time limit, unmarked white bays are free, and yellow lines mean no parking. Parking charges and parking fines are the renter's to pay.

05 Leaving it somewhere else

Set a different drop-off in the search and the one-way fee shows with the price. With Tenerife South, Puerto de la Cruz is among the deeper one-way pairings, after the airport-to-airport pairing and Playa de las Americas, in both directions.
